Latimer Heritage Society In 1841, Robert Howcutt
(1778-1846), a farmer, and his sister Martha (1774-1850) were living at
Burton Latimer, Northamptonshire. Their home was apparently on the west side
of the High Street, possibly in the thatched cottage at 32 High Street which
stands at the junction known as "The Cross". The picture above
shows it at a date after the war memorial was constructed in 1922 but before
it was relocated in 1962. The cottage is still thatched, as can be seen in
the picture below which was taken in 2014. Neither Robert nor Martha ever
married. They were children of Robert & Mary (Cowdell)
Howcutt of Bitteswell and had both been baptised at Lutterworth Independent
chapel. Robert died of typhus fever at
Burton Latimer on 4 August 1846. Administration of his estate was granted to
Martha as his “only sister, next of kin”. Martha returned to Bitteswell,
where she was buried on 17 May 1850. |
